CULP: Spanish for Academic Purposes (LAP)

Spanish for Academic Purposes (LAP) for Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Researchers

One 90 minute lesson weekly.

These courses run for three terms (Mich/Lent/Easter). To register, please go to the Language Centre Enrolment page.

This weekly class is intended to help students in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading Spanish documents that they may meet in their research.

Classes will be conducted in English, but there will be many opportunities to use Spanish and practise reading aloud.

This course will start at a Basic level from scratch.

The first 7 weeks will focus on the basics of the Spanish grammar and the reading fairly basic texts in Spanish. Those who already have a decent grasp of the language are most welcome to attend these introductory sessions. Or, you might opt to join us from session 6.

From week 8 to week 11 we will be working on a set of texts of my choosing. These will cover a range of topics (history, literature, music, philosophy etc.) and periods. In choosing these texts I will take into account the academic background and interest of the members of the group.

From week 12 to the end of lent and in Easter, we will be working in small groups on texts brought in by students. I expect these to be from the students reading list and of immediate interest.

By the end of the course, students will be able to cope with complex texts as well as scan research material to assess its suitability.
