Pedro Barriuso-Algar

Profile

Originally from Barcelona, Pedro spent most of his life in Seville. He graduated in English and Spanish from the University of Seville, where he also got his teaching qualification. Since moving to Cambridge he has taught Spanish at different levels and in many educational contexts: secondary, adult, further and higher education. During his time in Cambridge he has also gained a Master of Arts Degree in Applied Linguistics from the Open University.

Sebastián Bianchi

Profile

Sebastián is a Associate Professor of Spanish at the Language Centre, Co-ordinator of Spanish at the Language Unit (Department of Engineering) and Teaching By-Fellow at Churchill College, where he conducts research and teaches Hispanic Studies. An avid writer of articles and books, his publications as co-author include the multimedia language programme Spanish At Your Fingertips (BBC Active), AS/A2 Exam Revision Notes, AS and A2 Resource Packs, AS/A2 Q&A Guide and the book of games Friday Afternoon (all with Philip Allan, Updates/Hodder Education) and the recent Spanish B for the IB Diploma (Hodder & Stoughton). Sebastián continues to support Teachers  and learners in the UK and Argentina, his home country, with enthusiasm.

Ruth Hatcher

Profile

Ruth has been teaching Spanish for the last 18 years. A native of Colombia, proud of her Spanish roots and her Latin American origin, she moved to New York after living in Bucaramanga and Bogotá the Colombian capital. She had worked within the Colombian Institute of Higher Education (ICFES) and later on, as an independent journalist for international publications, including a role as a contributing editor to a worldwide travel guide.

In the United States, she redesigned her teaching career and worked in a number of language institutes and within corporations such as NBC, the media group and at the American Museum of National History. After September 11, 2001, she and her family were relocated to the UK. She now teaches Spanish as foreign language within the University of Cambridge at the Engineering Department's Language Unit and with CULP at the Language Centre, and as a member of MFL team at Swavesey Village College.

Her education includes an honours degree in Education and Modern Languages from the Universidad Industrial de Santander. She subsequently specialised in communications and broadcasting and studied for a Masters degree in Latin American literature.

Dr Cynthia Rocha

Profile

Alicia is an Affiliated Lecturer of Spanish at the Department of Spanish & Portuguese in the Faculty of Modern & Medieval Languages, Consultant Author for the Open University and for Cambridge University Press, ALevel examiner for Cambridge Assessments, Intituto Cervantes Examiner levels A1 - C2, and Teaching Associate of Spanish at St Mary´s School Cambridge.

Her recent contributions as author for the OU inlude an Open Learning Course (B1) and two books for the Spanish IB Diploma ab initio for Cambridge University Press.

Alicia enjoys collaborating with the University and the Colleges in outreach events for Year 10 and Year 12 learners of Spanish.

She has been teaching Spanish for Medics at the Language Centre for the last three years.

She is from Madrid, where she took her first degree in English Philology and her PhD in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Alicia also have an MA in Education (TESOL) from the Institute of Education (University of London) and a Diploma in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language.

Dr Cynthia Rocha

Profile

Cynthia has been teaching Portuguese and Spanish since 1999. She has a BA in Portuguese and Spanish Language and Literature from the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil and a doctoral degree in Second Language Acquisition from the University of Barcelona, Spain. She also holds a Cambridge CELTA certificate.

She has taught at different levels and in a variety of contexts, such as language institutes, secondary schools and Higher Education Institutions in Brazil and the UK.

As a co-author, Cynthia has published a book chapter in learner autonomy in academic speaking contexts as well as teaching activities and articles on Second Language Learning.

Currently, Cynthia teaches Portuguese as a foreign language for CULP and Spanish for Medics at the Language Centre. Her main objective is to create a positive and engaging learning environment. She says that it is very rewarding to witness the progress that ab initio learners can achieve in such a short time.
