Acting Director of the Language Centre [Temporary Cover] Internal Secondment Opportunity

The Language Centre seeks to appoint an Acting Director to lead the Centre strategically and operationally from the 01 October 2024. This post is fixed-term for 4 years or the return of the post holder, whichever is the earlier, whilst the current role-holder is seconded to another role in the University. The post is offered to internal candidates only on the basis of a secondment from their current role in the University.

Educated to at least higher degree level, the role holder will have experience of managing major academic activities or initiatives, and HE Teaching experience in a language or language-related discipline. They will have exceptional leadership skills and proven ability to operate within a complex governance environment. They will also have experience of managing staff, finance and other resources.

The Acting Director represents the Language Centre in academic and non-academic matters on the Council of the School, and other School or central Committees as appropriate. The Acting Director also has a formal responsibility to further the academic and non-academic (e.g. fundraising and administrative support) interests of the Language Centre both internally and externally. The role-holder will foster a collegiate, supportive and inclusive culture for staff and students.

The successful candidates will be based at the Language Centre in Downing Place, Central Cambridge. The Language Centre provides language learning opportunities for all members of the University, supports the teaching of languages in various University institutions and assists in the development of language teaching and learning as appropriate.
