CULP: Russian for Academic Purposes (LAP)

Russian for Academic Purposes (LAP) for Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Researchers

One 90 minute lesson weekly.

These courses run for three terms (Mich/Lent/Easter). To register, please go to the Language Centre Enrolment page.

The weekly class is intended to assist students in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading Russian documents that they may meet in their research.

Classes will be conducted in English, but there will be many opportunities to use Russian and practise reading aloud.

The first 7 weeks will focus on the basics of Cyrillic alphabet, syntax and grammar, gradually introducing reading of some abridged classics of Russian literature. Those who already have a decent grasp of the language are most welcome to attend these introductory sessions. Or, you might opt to join us from session 8.

From week 8 to week 12 we will be working on a set of texts of my choosing. These will cover a range of topics (history, literature, music, philosophy, etc.) and periods (XIX – XXI centuries). In choosing these texts I will take into account the academic background and interest of the members of the group.

From week 13 to the end of Lent, we will be working in small groups on texts brought in by students. I expect these to be from the students’ reading lists and to be of immediate interest.

By the end of the course, students will be able to cope with complex texts as well as scan research material to assess its suitability.

Russian LAP - Timetable 2023/24
