CULP: Italian for Academic Purposes (LAP)

Italian for Academic Purposes (LAP) for Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Researchers

One 90 minute lesson weekly.

These courses run for three terms (Mich/Lent/Easter). To register, please go to the Language Centre Enrolment page.

This course is designed to cater for the needs of students with no previous experience in Italian language.

The weekly class is intended to assist students in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading Italian documents that they may meet in their research.

Classes will be conducted in English, but there will be many opportunities to use Italian and practise reading aloud.

This course will start at Basic level and move quickly through the basics of Italian grammar. Students with some background in the Italian language (Intermediate level) are most welcome to join the group in January (Lent term) when we start reading more complex, original texts.

The course will start (7 weeks in Michaelmas) focusing on the basics of the Italian grammar and the reading of some simplified texts.

In weeks 8 to 12 (Lent) we will be working on a varied set of Italian texts from different periods. These will cover a range of topics (history, literature, music, philosophy etc.) and periods (from 13th to 21th centuries). In choosing these texts the academic background and interest of the members of the group will be taken into account.

In the last 3 weeks of the course (weeks 13-15) students will be bringing their own texts for reading, analyses and discussion.

Italian LAP - Timetable 2023/24
