Dr Cynthia Rocha

Profile

Viviane Carvalho da Annunciação holds a PhD in Literary Studies from the University of São Paulo, where she also received a joint degree in Portuguese and English Studies.

Having been accepted as a visiting scholar at CLAS in April 2014, she discovered that there was interest among the Spanish-speakers postgraduate scholars at the Centre in improving their knowledge of Portuguese. In order to supply this demand, she developed two courses which focused on interactive debates, contextualized by current cultural issues.
This methodology proved to be effective, since she could not only provide the students with the confidence to learn a new language quickly, but also with the autonomy to fall back on their own experience in class.

In 2015, she was invited to work as a Portuguese supervisor for the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages, where she has been giving weekly supervisions. She has also developed activities for the Cambridge University online platform HE+, which help secondary students to make informed choices when applying for university courses.

As a result of the success of her classes in CLAS and MML, Cambridge University decided to make them available from September 2016 to a wider studentship via the Cambridge University Language Programme (CULP).

Her current research interests also include Brazilian and Latin American avant-garde, poetry and politics and new methodologies in language learning.
