A Niger-Congo language and a member of the West Atlantic family of languages, spoken by over 2 million people as a first or second language mainly in Senegal, with some speakers in nearby Gambia. It is used as an important lingua franca throughout the region.
Wolof is spoken in a variety of dialects. Although the language is not standardized, Dakar Wolof seems to be emerging as a potential standard form. It is spelt in both Arabic and Roman alphabets.
Oral literature in Wolof is substantial.
