An Indo-European language and a member of the South Slavic group, spoken by c. 9 million people, mainly in the Republic of Bulgaria, where it is the official language, as well as in nearby parts of Greece, Yugoslavia, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine.
Old Bulgarian, recognised as the first Slavonic literary language, dates from the 10th century. Modern literary Bulgarian is based on the western dialect. It is spelt in the Cyrillic alphabet consisting of 30 characters. The orthography of the language follows the phonemic principle with very rare exceptions. The closest linguistic affiliation is with Macedonian.
Unlike most of the Slavic languages, Bulgarian deviated considerably from the common Slavonic norm, losing, for example, a rich nominal morphology.
