Dr Kate Daniels

Profile

Kate’s ADTIS experience goes back to 1997, when she began teaching academic writing and research skills to international students at SOAS, University of London, where she was studying for her PhD in Modern Arabic Literature. She then joined the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cambridge, where she held the Mellon Fellowship in the Modern Middle East and for eight years lectured in Arabic language and literature. She has held a Visiting Fellowship at Wolfson College and is a Senior Member of Newnham College, where she acts as Director of Studies in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and is a Special Supervisor in Arabic.

In her current role, she teaches on the pre-sessional and in-sessional ADTIS courses and offers workshops and supervisions to international students across all disciplines. She assesses applicants to Cambridge’s International Summer Schools and leads and co-ordinates its CEAP summer programme. In addition, she is the creator and provider of a suite of Personal and Study Skills (PASS) workshops, and is currently developing online learning materials to assist international students’ transition to UK higher education.

After graduating with a BA in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Exeter University, Kate’s first job was as a newspaper editor for an English-language weekly in Jordan, after which she held various academic editorial and research assistant posts. She has worked as a researcher, translator and consultant for an award-winning Channel 4 short film on the Palestinian film archive, and as a language consultant for Oxford University Press. She has published extensively on academic and non-academic subjects.

A qualified psychotherapist, Kate has worked as a counsellor with a family centre in Norfolk and at the University of Cambridge Counselling Service, where she offered support to students experiencing study, welfare and personal difficulties. A keen (if amateur) medievalist, she ranks herself as among the Eastern region’s top ten experts on the Hanseatic port-town of King’s Lynn, and writes sporadic blog entries on perfume and its cultural history.
