Zulu

A Niger-Congo language and a member of the Bantu family (Nguni group), spoken by over 6 million people in the Republic of South Africa, especially in northern Natal (formerly known as Zululand; now KwaZulu), with some further speakers in Lesotho; also known as IsiZulu.

Nguni languages are unique among the Bantu family in the use of click sounds as consonants. These sounds were borrowed form the neighbouring Khoisan languages.

The closest linguistic affiliation of Zulu is with Xhosa, the two languages being mutually intelligible to a great extent. Zulu is spelt in the Roman alphabet. Its vocabulary shows considerable influence from Afrikaans and English.

Like many other Bantu languages, Zulu is also a tonal language.
