Twi (Akan, Asante)

A Niger-Congo language and a member of the Kwa family, spoken by up to 8 million people in Ghana (mainly between the Volta and Tano Rivers) and the Cote d'Ivoire, with some further speakers in Togo. It is an important lingua franca in the region; also known as Akan.

The language is spoken in two major dialects - Ashanti and Fante, which are mutually intelligible, but sometimes considered as separate languages because of their different cultural and literary traditions. It was the Ashanti dialect, though, that began to be recognized as the proper base for a national literary language through the first half of the 20th century. Twi is spelt in the Roman alphabet, standardized in 1961 by the Bureau of Ghana Languages.

There are three main tones in Twi - high, middle and low. The tones are phonemic.
