Telugu

A member of the Dravidian family (south-east group), spoken by over 50,000 million people in south-east India, mainly in Andhra Pradesh, where it is the official state language, with some further speakers in Malaysia and South Africa.

The earliest written records date from the 7th century, and a literary tradition started emerging from the 11th century, both in Sanskrit and Telugu. Today the language is spoken in four main dialects, all of them found in two varieties in a relationship of diglossia.

The Telugu script is a syllabary very close to that of Kannada. It is a descendant of the ancient Brahmi script.
