Tarafit (Tamazight)

An Amazigh (Berber) language from the Afro-Asiatic family. It has approximately 1.3 million speakers in Morocco (mostly in the Rif region in the north of the country), and an estimated 200,000 speakers among the Rifian diaspora in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain and Algeria.

Tarifit, also known as Tamazight or Rif Berber among other names, has always been essentially a spoken language, with widespread variation among dialects and strong influence from other languages. The predominant literary forms in the language have been song, story-telling and, above all, poetry.

In common with the other Amazigh dialects, the Moroccan state declared in 2003 that Tarifit should be taught and written in the Neo-Tifinagh script, but Roman script is also used widely.
