The film is based on the book of the same name by author, Stieg Larsson who wrote it as part of a trilogy.

It tells the story of a damaged young woman called Lisbeth, who helps a financial journalist called Mikael Blomkvist solve the disappearance of a young woman from a wealthy family some forty years earlier.
