A Finno-Ugric language and a member of the Finnic group, spoken by c. 40,000 people mainly in northern Norway, with some further speakers in northern Sweden, Finland and Russia; also known as Saami, Same or Samic.
Earliest written documents date from the 17th century, when the first printed book appeared in Swedish Sami. Today Sami is spoken in three main dialects - Southern, Northern and Eastern, sometimes considered to be different languages. There is no common literary language, although there is an increasing interest in Sami language and culture.
Sami is written in the Roman alphabet with local additions and adaptations. In Russia the Cyrillic script is also used.
