This dictionary is founded on Madan's English-Swahili dictionary.

Compiled in 1903 and dealt with the dialect of Swahili commonly spoken in Zanzibar City.

The editors of this dictionary trace some of the origins of words borrowed from other languages (e.g. Arabic, Hindi, Persian, Turkish, English and Bantu languages).
