Based on the novel of the same name by Mikhail Bulgakov, the film is set in Moscow shortly after the October revolution.

It tells the story of a surgeon called Preobrazhensky who decides to conduct an experiment, implanting the heart and brain of a tramp into a dog. The dog gradually transforms into a man but still has certain dog-like tendencies.
