Based on the novel of the same name by Mia Couto, the film is set in Mozambique during the Civil War.

Muidinga is a young, orphaned refugee, searching for his mother and accompanied on his journey by Tuahir, an old man. They come across a diary on a dead body and inside it talks about a mother looking for her lost son. Muidinga latches onto the hope that it could be talking about his mother and sets off to find her.

In Portuguese throughout with English subtitles.
