Udju azul di Yonta (1992)
Gomez, Flora
This film highlights some of the issues created in a developing country in the struggle between tradition and progress.
Filmed almost twenty years after Guinea-Bissau won independence from Portugal in 1974, this is only the third film to be released from the country. It tells the story of Yonta, a beautiful modern young girl who is in love with Vicente, a campaigner in the fight for independence. Her love is unrequited, but in turn she is worshipped from afar by Ze, a peasant boy who sends Yonta poems warning her against living in a fantasy world.
In Portuguese (with Creole), with English subtitles.
