Based on Clarice Lispector's best-seller, this film tells the story of Macabea, an orphan girl from the north-east of Brazil, who begins her working life as a typist in a city.

In this film the director reaches out into the world of the more 'marginal' people in society, doing so in a non-realist fashion.
