A member of the Austronesian family of languages, spoken by c. 10 million people as a first language mainly in Malaysia and Thailand, as well as in Singapore and Brunei. It is also widely used as a lingua franca throughout the Indonesian archipelago; also known as Bahasa Malay; the closest linguistic affiliation is with Indonesian (also known as Bahasa Indonesian).
Written records date from the 7th century and the literary tradition started emerging with the arrival of Islam in the 15th century. Today the language is spoken in many dialects and varieties, Bazaar Malay being one of them.
Malay is written in both the Roman and Arabic alphabets.
