Ganda / Luganda

A Niger-Congo language and a member of the Bantu group of languages, spoken by c. 3.5 million people mainly in Buganda (south-east Uganda), between Lake Victoria and Lake Kyogo.

Ganda developed over centuries as a spoken language. It was not until after the second half of the 19th century that the language was first written down and appeared in print. The standard orthography of Ganda was introduced in 1947. The language is written in the Roman alphabet, consisting of 24 characters.

Tone in Ganda is of cardinal phonemic importance, which is probably a general characteristic of most present-day Bantu languages.

Sometimes the generic term Ganda is used to refer to the people, their language and customs.
