The film is set in the mid nineteenth century in Austrian occupied Lombardy where Franco, a young man of noble descent, decides to marry Luisa against his grandmother's wishes.

Their happy marriage is short lived when their daughter drowns, bringing Luisa to the brink of a breakdown.
