A story told in a series of flashbacks about the life of Carlo, a retired Senior Professor of Italian.

The film starts with Carlo's christening in 1906 and then follows his life up to his 80th birthday in 1986. Upholding Italian family values is a central theme to this film and Carlo struggles with this when he falls in love with his wife's sister.
