Paolo e Vittorio Taviani (1999)

The film is based on the real life of Gavino Ledda. Set in Sardinia, it follows Gavino from childhood into adulthood as he is forced to leave school by his brutal and sadistic father in order to tend the family sheep.

Eventually he finds his escape through military service and sets about gaining the education he missed and now desperately craves.
