In 1941 a small unit of inept Italian soldiers is sent to a tiny Greek island in the Aegean for a short period of lookout duty.

Their relief ship is torpedoed and their radio destroyed.

Entirely disconnected from the outside world, they become absorbed into the romance of life on the idyllic island, which turns out not to be deserted, as they originally thought.
