Film is based on the first book of the Divine Comedy, in which Dante is led through Hell by his guide, Virgil.
It employs an impressive range of cinematic and theatrical special effects to reproduce the hellish tortures and landscapes described in Dantes poem, taking particular visual inspiration from Gustave Dore´s nineteenth-century engravings.
