Herero

A Niger-Congo language and a member of the Bantu family of languages, spoken by c. 160,000 people mainly in Namibia, where it is one of the national languages, and Botswana with some further speakers in Angola; also called Ochiherero (Otjiherero) or Damara.

People of the Herero tribe arrived in Botswana at the turn of the 19th century from Namibia. Their language is today spoken in several dialects, forming a dialect continuum with other Bantu languages.

Herero is a tonal language, which is also a general characteristic of present-day Bantu languages. It has a rich nominal and verbal morphology. It is spelt in the Roman alphabet.
