An Indo-European language and a member of the Indo-Iranian branch (Indo-Aryan group) of languages language, spoken by c. 40 million people mainly in the State of Gujarat, Western India (its official language); also spoken in Pakistan (c. 400,00 speakers), and some 15 million speakers throughout the world in the UK, the USA. The principal Gujarati dialects are: Pattani, Surati, Charotari, Kathiawadi.
