A member of the Tupi family and the Tupi-Guarani language group, spoken by c. 3 million people in Paraguay (where it is an official language together with Spanish). It is also spoken in neighbouring regions of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Uruguay.
The Guarani people are the descendents of the Tupi tribes who migrated to Paraguay in the 15th century. Guarani was established as a written language by the Jesuit communities in Paraguay in the 16th century. Today it is spoken in a few mutually intelligible dialects, the main ones being Yopara (in Paraguay) and Eastern Bolivian Guarani.
The language is spelt in the Roman alphabet with diacritics. A standardized orthography was adopted at the Montevideo Congress in 1950.
