The film is a post-Holocaust drama, set in Germany, 1958, where a lawyer called Johann takes on the case of a Jew who has recognised one of his former concentration camp guards in the street.

As Germany is keen to leave the past behind, no one is willing to help Johann and he goes against the wishes of his superior to begin working on the case.
