The film follows Sven Lehnert, a nineteen year old German student, who is doing his compulsory civilian service at Auschwitz.

One of his main duties is to care for an elderly former inmate of the camp called Stanislav who now works there but it is only when Sven falls in love with Ania, a tourist guide at the camp, he finally develops a real understanding of the terrible history and real life suffering that took place there.
