A film set in post-war Germany where Maria Braun's marriage ceremony is disrupted by an air-raid.

Maria reconstructs her life after 'losing' her husband, Hermann, to the Russian front. The plot moves on many levels, retelling individual struggles for survival in West Germany during the difficult aftermath of the Second World War.
