This English-language film is based upon the homoerotic novel 'Querelle de Brest' by Jean Genet.

The story evolves around a proud and tough sailor named Querelle who on shore in the port of Brest gets entangled in drug-smuggling and homosexual adventures.

The film is shot against the orange glow of a permanent sunset, giving it a strangely surreal and dreamlike appearance.
