This is an audio adaptation of Droste-Hülshoff's well-known nineteenth century novella, the tale of Friedrich Mergel who is accused by the locals in his village of murdering a Jewish man.

The story explores the circumstances leading up to the murder, the subsequent disappearance of Friedrich along with his devoted friend, Johannes Niemand, and events that take place years later.
