Walter Faber is a 50-year-old UNESCO engineer who studied in Zurich in the thirties and separated there from his great love Hannah.
After a plane crash, he discovers the brother of his university friend Joachim Henke among the passengers and learns that Joachim married Hannah but had to leave her because she was Jewish.
