The film is based on a play of the same name by Jean-Luc Lagarce and tells the story of Louis, a 34-year-old writer who is terminally ill.

He returns home for the first time in years to inform his family and friends of his shattering news. His family reunion however stirs up tensions, leaving Louis feeling unable to confide in them.
