The film is animated and based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by Marjane Satrapi.

Set in the seventies in Iran, the main character, Marjane, is an outspoken young girl who struggles with the oppression of the Iranian government on its people. Fearful of her arrest, her parents decide to send her to a French school in Vienna which makes her feel increasingly isolated and lonely.
