The film is based on the novel by Pascal Quignard, set during the reign of Louis XIV and centering on the character of Monsieur de Sainte Colombe.

Grief-stricken after the death of his wife, he retreats from the world with his two daughters to a small house in his garden but his solitude is disturbed when an aspiring musician seeks him out to be his mentor.
