The film is set in the eighteenth century and depicts the social injustice at that time with corruption and callousness running through the heart of the aristocracy.

Gregoire Ponceludon de Malavoy, is a minor aristocrat and country engineer, who travels to court seeking the King's help with saving people in his town from disease and death but finds those around him at court shallow and unfeeling - except for on Doctor's daughter.
