A French costume drama and tragedy set in early 20th-century Paris and based on Louise De Vilmorin's novel.

Countess Louise de...(known as Madame de...) sells the precious earrings given to her by her husband to clear a gambling debt then pretends she lost them at the opera. The general, however, discovers the truth, buys the earrings himself and gives them to his mistress, Lola, who initiates the next stage of the earrings' cyclical journey.
