Le misanthrope (1977)
Carrère, Jean-Paul
Production of Molière's play recorded for French television.
Alceste, the misanthrope of the title, is unpopular in every social circle for his wholesale rejection of contemporary conventions. His pursuit of sincerity at all costs causes offence when he refuses to compliment a sonnet by Oronte. In contrast, Philinte lectures Alceste on the need for polite flattery to smooth over the rough edges of a complex society.
In French without subtitles.
