In Paris, during the winter after its liberation, Jean Diego meets up with an old friend, Raymond Lecuyer. A tramp, claiming to be Destiny personified, tells Jean that he will meet the most beautiful woman in the world later that day. The same evening, Jean meets Malou, but soon discovers that it was her brother who denounced Raymond to the Gestapo.
