The film is set in a remote town in Cameroon during the last days of France's African colonies.
A white family are living there with their daughter, France, who forms a special friendship with their servant called Protée. When a plane makes an emergency landing nearby, the arrival of strangers causes resentments and racism, threatening to disrupt the family's ordered world.
