Based on a novel by Jacques Perret, this film is set in a French prisoner of war camp during World War 2.

It opens with newsreel footage of the Germans invading France (June 22nd 1940) and goes on to tell a light-hearted tale of life inside a German-run camp where a French prisoner of war nicknamed 'The Corporal' makes several attempts to escape, each time being re-captured in comedic ways.

In French with parallel subtitles. Includes some short conversations in German with no subtitles.
