This 19th century work of poetry is regarded as the national epic of Finland and consists of 50 chapters, translated here into English.
The Kalevala begins with the traditional Finnish creation myth, leading into stories of the creation of the earth, plants, creatures and the sky. As well as magic spells and singing, the poem includes stories of seduction and kidnapping.
