Ewe

Ewe is a member of the Volta-Niger branch of Niger-Congo languages. with around 2.25 million speakers in Eastern Ghana and parts of Togo. A further number of speakers use it as a lingua franca in Central Togo and Benin.

Also known as Ebwe, Efe, Ehwe, Eibe, Eue, Eve, Gbe, Krepe, Krepi, Popo and Vhe, Ewe has many dialects which can be broadly grouped as Western, Central and Eastern all of which are mutually intelligible.

Classed as a national language in Ghana , English being the official language). Ewe is studied at all levels of education in Ghana and in Togo (where French is the official language) it is promoted along with Kayibe as the language of official use in education and mass media.
