This film is set in England during the second World War on a family estate in the country.

Briony knowingly wrongly identifies Robbie, the gardener, as the culprit when a young girl is attacked. The ensuing scandal sees Robbie joining the army.

Remorse eats away at Briony throughout her life and atonement is something she can never achieve.
