The film is set in German occupied Czechoslovakia and is considered one of the finest films from the Czechoslovak New Wave.

The sexual awakenings of an apprentice guard at a rural railway station during World War II are balanced by the exploits of the station guard who resolves to do as little work as possible, always with the horror of war never far away.
