Shanghai dreams
Wang Xiaoshuai (2005)
The film is set in the 1980s, when China starts opening up to the world, and follows the story of a displaced family.
In the wake of China's tense relations with the USSR some twenty years earlier, the government had moved strategically important factories away from the cities, and with them the workers and their families.
But tensions arise between the old generation, longing to return to the city, and the young daughter, who falls for a local boy; the film is in Chinese with English subtitles.
